Sports at Copleston
Copleston PE department offers a broad range of practical sporting activities to enable the students to discover physical pathways, develop existing skills and apply technique to modified and full sided games. Although the Key Stage 3 curriculum is weighted towards invasion games it also allows students to study in areas such as health and fitness, trampolining, dance and athletics. At Key Stage 4, students adopt specific activity pathways that suit their needs and preferences, allowing them to look further into the tactical aspects of each game or event.
Students are actively encouraged to join extra-curricular clubs at either a recreational or competitive level and Copleston has a long tradition of success in a range of sports at local, county, regional and national level. Most recently in 2022 both U13 handball teams reached the National Handball finals. In 2023 four of the five Basketball teams that entered the national cup made it to the national quarter finals, three to semi-finals and one to the final in Manchester.
This basketball success is linked directly to the extremely strong Basketball Academy that has incredibly close ties with the PE department. Around 40 sixth form students belong tp the Ipswich Basketball Academy that is based at Copleston Sixth Form. Students from all over the country apply to come to study A Levels whilst playing for the Academy team. This has brought amazing sporting and academic success with teams continually reaching WEABL final fours and a number of students gaining full scholarships to American Universities playing in Division 1 and 2 in the NCAA.
To celebrate the rich diversity of successes at a competitive level, the school holds an annual Sports Awards Evening. The Copleston Legacy is reflected in the way these stars of the future embrace the ethos of the school in everything they do as we celebrate commitment and involvement as well as sporting excellence. Students involved in "Sports Captains" are involved in hosting sports festivals for local primary schools and competitions at local community.
Sports courses, such as GCSE PE, V-Cert Sport and A Level PE are well subscribed and successful, with many students pursuing sports related courses at degree level. We pride ourselves in the excellent results achieved by pupils based on high levels of practical application combined with strong theory exam results.
Copleston is an excellent school with a “can do” ethos for its entire young people. The young people in its community at school and our linked primary schools and community clubs receive the highest levels of both quantity and quality of activities through their committed vision for sport and physical activity.
